Rocks and Minerals Identification

Students will explore how to use the physical characteristics to group and identify rocks. They will learn how to use rock exploration and identification tools including shovels, sieves, microscopes, hand lenses, scratch plates, magnets, and diluted HCl in order to identify unknown rocks. We will also teach them the basics of how to collect and organize data about rocks.

Earth Art

Students can use chalk to draw different geologic processes and structures to increase their understanding of them. They can then connect different kinds of rocks to how they were formed by these processes and what structures they are found in.
