What's In Here?

  • Thank you

  • Spring Term Volunteers

  • New Demos

  • Summer Term Events

  • Fall Term Opportunities

Thank you! We made it out to 11 events this past spring, reaching an estimated 1300 students and parents in the Puget Sound area. We also demo'd three new lessons with some of these students!

Spring Term Volunteers thanks for making Rockin' Out work! Phil Greene, Susannah Morley, Brita Horlings, Ellen Ng, Quinn Oksoktaruk, Lindsey Davidge, Annika Horlings, Chelsea Van Landeghen, Sarah Schanz, Ben Cohen, Erik Goosmann, Kalina Stork, Paige Wilson, Joel Gombiner, and Emma Kahle (special shout out to Hope Sisley and Lauren O'Neil for volunteering for an event which unfortunately ended up cancelled)

New Demos

We're constantly working to update and add to our list of demos and lessons which we can bring to schools and events in the area. While we have many current staples, we are also working to bring back some old lessons! Here are some of the new lessons we've added recently:

  • GPS Plate Motion

  • students learn how to interpret GPS data and vectors, and explore plate motion and trends from geodesy data around the country

  • GPS Gumdrop Model

  • students learn how GPS works and build a (delicious) model of a receiver to practice measuring locations

  • Strata Jar

  • shake, settle, and repeat to teach students about sediment deposition and how rocks are made

  • AR Sandbox

  • we can't take credit for this one, but we're excited to bring the AR sandbox to more schools for lessons on topography, erosion, and landscape processes

If you're ever interested in working on developing a new lesson, or just have an idea of something you think could work, let us know!

What events are already on the books for Summer?

A lot of our summer programming is on campus, making it super easy to get in some outreach over the summer term. The below are all summer-camp style programs which would meet in Johnson for a lesson with us.

  • Science Camp for Kids with Autism 7/11

  • DO-IT Summer Program (exact time/date TBD--let us know what works for you!)

  • UW Summer Youth Programs 8/8 (date flexible)

See our full list of events here and fill out this form to sign up!

Fall Term Opportunity

Just a quick reminder that we'll be soliciting applications for a new Rockin' Out coordinator to join Paige Wilson next year! There will be announcements at the start of fall, but start dusting off your CVs now...
